Great Salt Lake & Antelope Island State Parks, UT
The Great Salt Lake is located just north west of Salt Lake City, UT and is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. It is what remains of the prehistoric Lake Bonneville which covered approximately 20,000 square miles of land in what is now Utah, Nevada and part of Idaho, 10,000 - 30,000 years ago.
It is the home of two State Parks: Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park.
Explore Great Salt Lake and its islands for beautiful scenery and recreational activities. You will find a marina with boat launching facilities. Sail or kayak on its waters, swim or sunbath at its white sand beaches, hike or mountain bike on the shoreline. Watch the beautiful colors of the sun setting over the lake.
Four rivers and several streams empty into the Great Salt Lake, bringing with them, minerals which are deposited into the lake. There is no outlet for these minerals, and as water evaporates, they are trapped.
Fish live in the freshwater marshes and inlets around the lake but cannot survive in the lake's salty waters.
Explore the trails and abundant wildlife at Antelope Island. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, duck and goose hunting. Explore clean beaches, a visitors center, marina, and an historic ranch house.
Keep an eye out for bison, antelope, deer, bobcats, coyotes and elk which roam freely on the island.
