Emigration Canyon, Salt Lake City, UT

Located near Salt Lake City, Emigration Canyon has trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. Best visited between March and October, most trails are dog-friendly and some allow dogs off-leash. The canyon's trails were used by Native Americans, the Pony Express, and Mormon pioneers to cross the Wasatch Mountains long before the area was settled.

EMIGRATION CANYON MINERS TRAIL

A moderate 5.0-mile out-and-back in the Red Butte Wilderness area, estimated at 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The trail follows an old mining road past the site of an old mine, climbing through forest to a final viewpoint. Shade at the start and end, exposed in the middle. Dogs are permitted off-leash. Note: the last section may not be suitable for all hikers or dogs.
